The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is an island country that was first established on 15 November 1983. It is a democratic and an independent country since then. The history dates back to the human traces initially found between Nicosia-Limassol, Chirokitia and around Yeşilırmak. Excavations also reveals that the first autochthonous people came from Asia to Northern Cyprus.
As a result of the excavations, the excavated houses reflected the cultural interaction of both the Anatolian and Mesopotamian houses. Cyprus has been home to many civilizations and has been ruled by many great powers in the past. The empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians, and Persians colonized and ruled this region. Moreover, they came under the power of Ptolemaic Egypt, the Roman Empire and the Byzantines. Great powers such as Arab caliphates, the French Lusignan Dynasty, and the Venetians, ruled this region until Ottomans conquered it in 1571.
On the other hand, during Ottoman Empire, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the magnificent wanted to dominate the Mediterranean Sea including the region of TRNC. Similarly, on 1 August 1571, while the Magosa surrender, the Ottoman Empire conquered the region. For 307 years, until the Berlin agreement made in 1878, TRNC remained under the Turkish Empires.
History of North Cyprus
Cyprus came under the British administration through the treaty of Berlin in 1878. According to this treaty, the Ottoman Empire let the Britain use the Cyprus as a temporary base while it will remain officially under the control of Ottoman Empire. Similarly, the Britain will in return support the Ottoman Empire in order to keep them safe from Russian threats. On the other hand, the Ottoman Empire chose not to support Britain during World War 1, so Britain declared the annexation of Cyprus.
Although, the Greek Cypriots were not satisfied with Britain rule and wanted Cyprus to be a part of Greek Territory. For this purpose, they rebelled against Britain at first but they ended up killing large number of people including many Turks. As a result, many conflicts started between Turks and Greeks of this region. In 1963, the Greeks began to target the Turkish counterpart’s in order to eliminate the Turkish citizens from the island.
This conflict turned into a long war marked with violence that continued till 1974. The republic of Turkey interfered and forced joined with the Turkish Cypriots to fight back to Greek Cypriots. During 1975, the Turkish federated State of Cyprus declared as a federated Cypriot state for future. While the Republic of Cyprus, the international community as well as the United Nations rejected this decision. Then the next years, they tried to negotiate with the leadership of Greek Cypriot community but failed and all efforts went in vain.
On 15 November 1983, finally, the North declared its independence under the name of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), while it is not the part of Republic of Cyprus anymore.On the other hand, United Nations and the Republic of Cyprus rejected the unilateral independence.
Cyprus as the Member of European Union
In 2000, the European Union accepted Northern Cyprus as a member with its division. At the same time, they suspended Northern Cyprus and Northern Cyrpus is not the official member of the European Union till today. It is believed that this decision was made to settle the affairs due to the threat of Greece to block Eastern EU expansion. Also, the decision conducted due to the view of pro-independence Turkish president Rauf Denktash. After the Cyprus becoming a member, a new government came to rule through election in Turkey while Rauf Denktash lost his political power.
Later, in 2004, a peace settlement was presented to hold a referendum to both sides by United Nations to solve out the issue. President of Republic of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos, and Turkish Cypriot (TRNC) president Rauf Denktash rejected the settlement. On the other hand, majority of Turkish Cypriots accepted the proposal but denied by Greek Cypriots.
On 3rd September 2008, meetings started to held between these two communities and discussions started between the leaders of both sides. Moreover, the direct talks occured for the settlement to propose an agreement on the establishment of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation so the communities will be able to enjoy political equality. At the same time, the United Nations is still trying to negotiate between both sides. Mustafa Akıncı is the president of TRNC and the Prime-Minister is Tufan Erhürman of Northern Cyprus, currently.
The Strong Nation and the Relations With Turkey
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been struggling to survive for so many years. The Turkish Cypriots maintained their liberal and democratic system, despite all the bad conditions, troubles and issues. Even though, the region is struggling with many issues till date, including the unstable economic conditions. Due to the political, economical issues, the dissatisfaction is wide spread that is leading many Turks to settle abroad. On the other hand, Northern Cyprus is developing its economical conditions slowly.
The non-government organizations and international communities are working in country to settle the issues between both sides, highlighting the fact that economic benefits of the solution would be far better than fighting. The emphasis by many communities are highlighting the point that the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots should live together in harmony and friendship, so their future generation will have secure country with better economy. Since 1974, the Northern Cypriots remain closed to Turkey. This is due to their needs for economic and defenses purposes.
Today, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is an independent democratic state located in the northern part of Cyprus and is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Furthermore, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus TRNC’s independence is recognized only by Turkey so far.
The Flag and language of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
The flag of Northern Cyprus consists two red stripes, one at the top and the other on the bottom. Also, a red star resides in the middle of the two red strips. The most common language in Northern Cyprus is Turkish.

The area is most famous for Tourism, as it is rich in stunning natural places. The tourism is also a major factor that contributes towards economy. Similarly, the Karpaz peninsula is the largest peninsula of the island and is famous for the spawning place for green turtles.
The other stunning places of the region include the Venetian Column, the Namik Kemal Museum, the Kyrenia Gate and St. Nicholas. Other must-see areas in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are Hilarion Castle, Selimiye Mosque St. Barnabas Monastery, Green Line, Kyrenia Old Harbor and Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque.
