Introduction:

Expansion in Kyrenia had almost stopped since 1974. However, this region of Cyprus can still be claimed as the most beautiful city in Cyprus. Kyrenia is the city which is situated on the northern coast of Cyprus. And it is famous for the historical harbor and the castle which is situated in the middle of this particular city. This city is De facto under the control of northern Cyprus along with the city of Trinity. De facto refers to the facts and practices which are applicable and exist in real life. But these practices are not officially recognized by the law and government of this particular state. This practice refers to the acts which occur in real life in contrast to the acts which should be done under the law and constitution of the particular country and is known and de jury.

History:

This region was founded in the tenth century by the Greeks, these Greek refugees moved to the region and started a settlement here. After a short period, this region was marked as one of the ten-city kingdoms of Classical Cyprus. This city was then guarded by a castle after the raid of Arabs. Afterward, the history revolves around the particular castle and the forces which tried to take over this particular castle. By the year 1300, the civilization moved towards the northwest of the region which is currently known as the old town. However, the harbor of the region was never left unguarded by the individuals living in the area and was protected by the Roman breakwater.

In the year 1600, this region declined in the security of the region of the raid of the Ottoman Empire in the region which greatly damaged the castle around the region. However, the castle and the region were revived after the movement of the British in the area. After World War II, several army personals retired and moved to the pleasant area to live the rest of their lives here along the harbor. However, the population declined greatly in the year 1974 when the Turkish attacked the region. Which is around 7000 in the present day.

Arrival and Orientation:

If you are traveling by air to Kyrenia, one can easily find several taxis and shuttle providers outside the airport, which can take you to Kyrenia through Nicosia. These taxis and shuttle providers will escort you to the central roundabout named Belediye Meydani. On the other hand, if you are traveling by boats or ships, you can easily find many Ferry boats and hydrofoils which will take you to central town from the dock located about 1500 meters away from the region.

Accommodation:

One can find several hotels in the region at normal prices to stay. These hotels can range from the most economical hotels to the most luxurious hotels. Some of the best hotels in the region are listed as Hotel British is one of the best ones found in the region. This is located at a mere distance of a lane from the yacht harbor. This hotel is designed as a 1960s restaurant with an open-air bar. Despite the name, this restaurant is majorly rushed by the German and Austrian tour groups.

Another hotel in the region is the Dome Hotel. This hotel is working in the region since 1930, however, renovated majorly in the year 1998. This renovation majorly defines the prices of the services being asked. Another advantage of the restaurant is the pool located in the middle of the hotel.

Kyrenia Castle:

This castle is an amalgam of several different periods. This mixture of several cultures and rulers in the area justifies the shape of the castle. This castle is open for all the tourists from 9 am to 7 pm in summers while 9 am to 4.45 pm in winter. However, there is a small token for the tourists to be paid before entering the castle. The amount of these tickets is collected and used for renovation purposes. This castle is majorly structured as the Venetian structure which is a mixture of the structures of Byzantine and Lusignan Castles. The present walls are thick which is obtained by filling the gaps between the Byzantine walls and the Lusignan walls with rubble.

This castle can be dated back to around 1191, which was then modified number of times in the years 1460 and 1464 by Queen Charlotte. This castle has a main entrance in the northwestern side of the castle. One may enter this castle form this entrance by passing over a bridge. Entering the castle one can get to the Byzantine chapel on the left. Along with the chapel, one may find several other attractions such as the towers, dungeons and the café for refreshments.

Harbor:

This is declared as one of the most beautiful harbors of the region with a number of attractions such as the museum that contains both Fine arts and Folk arts. Along with this, a number of cafes can be found on the seafront serving the tourists with the most economical food.
