Bilecik, lying in the green fertile lands of the river valley, is the eastern neighbor of Bursa in Marmara region. Its historical background goes back to 1950 BC, with many Anatolian civilizations in this Bithynian region.

Bilecik, Turkey’s Marmara Region is located in the old name ’Belekoma’, during the Byzantine Empire, is a province known.

History
The first known name of Bilecik, which is located in the south of Marmara, is Belekoma which means Köy Şirin Köy ’. Initially, notable civilizations such as the Hittites, the Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Romans and Byzantians ruled over this region.

Furthermore, the region also contains  Söğüt , the small town where the Ottoman Empire was founded in 1299, and is the source of important archeological as well as cultural artifacts.

Bilecik played also an important role during the War of Independence led by  Atatürk.

Historical Places of Bilecik
Söğüt, a little town which got its name from the numerous willows that surround the town. Söğüt Is the place where the Ottoman Empire founded and gave life size busts of famous figures of Turkish history. If you would like to see the whole of the history of Turkey before your eyes, then you should visit the Ethnographically Museum. There are many historical tombs and mosques in the province. Onyx handicrafts remain as a souvenir from Bilecik of which are of great value.

Moreover, other famous places include Atatürk Mansion, Bilecik Museum, Çelebi Sultan Mehmat Mosque, Dursun Fakih Tomb, İnönü Martyrdom and Şeyh Edebali Tomb.

Some of the sites of interest in the province include Osman Gazi  and  Orhan Gazi  mosques,  Seyh  Edebali and Mal Hatun mausoleums, Köprülü Mehmet Pasha mosque, Köprülü Caravanserai, Kaplikaya tombs, Rüstem Pasha mosque, and Gülalan Pavilion.

Plateau Tourism
The highlands of Bilecik province have a number of plateaus making possible what can be called plateau tourism. In addition, these plateaus have a lush covering of fir, pine, beech and juniper trees. Some of them have a lovely meadow like appearance and are very attractive summer camping sites. The Komursu plateau is a good site for winter tourism also. The Kamci plateau and the Sofular plateau at an altitude of 1600 meters are the other good sites for plateau tourism.
